Sarah Michelle Gellar Buffy The Vampire Slayer

You may or may not have heard, but Buffy’s back. Well soon to be. A new Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie has been green lit and is in the early stages of development. Not much is known about the new movie other then the fact that Buffy creator Joss Whedon is NOT attached to the movie. No actress has been named yet to play Buffy, so let’s look at a hypothetical list of the best suited young actresses to protect Sunnydale in this soon to be reboot.

First off, what does it take to play the iconic Buffy Summers? Being blonde is the obvious one, but Buffy also needs a good sense of humor. She needs to be a strong female lead but still possess a certain sense of vulnerability and enough athleticism to dust vamps. So which young Hollywood starlet would make a perfect Buffy? Here’s how we would rank them.

10. Kate Upton

Kate Upton

Kate Upton is obviously not the best choice to play Buffy, but she is in the right age range and has the California look to her. She’s been trying to get more involved in Hollywood movies and would pounce at the opportunity to lead this reboot. However, there would be a huge backlash amongst true Buffy fans, but teenage boys everywhere would line up opening weekend to see this buxom blonde do some high kicks while dusting vampires!

9. Bella Thorne

Young Actress Bella Thorne

Not as well known as some of the others, Bella Thorne has a very California look to her, is a fresh face and could push the franchise past the iconic looks of Sarah Michelle Gellar or Kristy Swanson. Bella might only be 16, but she looks a little older and has an ambiguous look to her age that would make her an ideal choice no matter what age they decided Buffy would be in the new movie.

8. Taylor Momsen

Taylor Momsen

If the producers of the new Buffy The Vampire Slayer movie want a lead actress with a little more edge, they need to look no further then 21 year old Taylor Momsen. It’s been 2 years since the young Momsen has acted in TV or movies, but the role of Buffy would be enough to lure her away from a year of touring with her band The Pretty Reckless. She wouldn’t be the Buffy we know and love, but would make for a great darker and more tortured version of the iconic vampire slayer. It would be the equivalent of the Dark Knight reboots.

7. Dakota Fanning / Elle Fanning

Depending on the age being cast for, one of the Fanning sisters would make for a good Buffy. Although I suspect there would be some backlash amongst fans, both sisters definitely have the right look for the role. If the new movie was set in high school Elle Fanning would make a great choice at age 16 and sister Dakota Fanning at 20 would be able to handle the role if they wanted Buffy to be more college aged.

6. Ashley Tisdale

Ashley Tisdale has the right look to play Buffy. There is something very Sarah Michelle Gellar to her look. She has a strong beauty that still holds a lot of femininity, much like the role. But at age 29, Ashley is the oldest on this list, but if the producers decided to have an older Buffy Summers, this High School Musical star would be a great fit.

5. Amanda Seyfried

amanda seyfried

Amanda Seyfried might be on the older side to play Buffy at age 28, but she would be an interesting choice. Besides being absolutely gorgeous, she has enough acting ability to bring the Buffy franchise to a whole new level. Her look also has that vulnerable look of a girl thrust into a world of vampires, demons and other horror monsters, but she still has a bit of edge in her look that let’s you know she means business.

4. Ashley Benson

Ashley Benson

24 year old Ashley Benson could be another contender for the role of Buffy. Being a California native she already has the look of Buffy down. Young, blonde and smoking hot she would be a good fit for the Buffy look and after seeing her in Spring Breakers, she can bring a little fight into any role she plays. If she can find the time to film around her Pretty Little Liars schedule, she would bring a big fan base with her to the Buffy franchise.

3. Chloe Grace Moretz

chloe grace moretz

Chloe Grace Moretz doesn’t have the look to play Buffy (She looks better suited as a Dawn Summers) but she definitely has many of the other characteristics to take the role. At age 17, she is the perfect age to play Buffy in a high school setting. Her work in the Kick-Ass franchise shows that she definitely has the acting ability, comedic chops for the role and would be the best fit athletically for all the vampire fighting sequences.

2. AnnaSophia Robb

At age 20, AnnaSophia Robb could easily play either a high school or college aged Buffy which would give the filmmakers some flexibility. She has the look for the role and is probably looking for the perfect vehicle in movies to play a lead, since her most known role was in Television on The Carrie Diaries. AnnaSophia isn’t best suited for the edginess of Buffy Summers, but she is definitely a big contender and will most likely be on the casting directors list of possibilities.

1. Hayden Panettiere

She may not be able to fill the shoes left behind by Sarah Michelle Gellar, but Hayden Panettiere is our frontrunner for the role of Buffy Summers. She’s only 25, has an extensive acting resume and is fresh faced and cute enough to take the role. Now that she’s an expecting mother, she will soon have that protective motherly killer instinct that might propel her to really sell the role.

No matter who gets chosen, there will be fan backlash. Scoobies across the world will hit up message boards threatening boycotts of the movie. We have to remember that whoever plays the role is not going to be the next Sarah Michelle Gellar and this is no longer our Buffy. This is a new era, for new fans to enjoy. It’s someone else’s turn to carry the vampire slayer torch and hopefully they don’t mess it up. Hopefully it brings some new fans to the old TV series and just increases the cult status of that quirkily little TV show we grew up with and loved.
